When you think of massage, what comes to mind? If you’re like most people, you probably think of a spa massage. You know, the kind where you lay down on a table, someone rubs your back for an hour, and you feel relaxed and rejuvenated when you get up and are off onto the rest of your day. While there’s nothing wrong with that type of massage, it’s important to understand that it’s not the only type of massage out there. A focused therapeutic massage is custom for each person.  One type of massage does not work for everyone and yet out of convenience and marketing, sometimes we “settle.”   In fact, therapeutic massage is quite different from your typical spa massage. In this article, we’ll dive into what you need to know about the difference between therapeutic and retail massage.

So, what exactly are the benefits of therapeutic massage? Let’s take a look!

Therapeutic Massage vs Retail Massage: What’s the Difference?

The main difference between therapeutic and retail massage is the intention of the massage. A therapeutic massage is focused on providing relief from pain, tension, or other physical ailments, as well as preventing further injury in the future. A retail massage, on the other hand, is focused on relaxation and stress relief.

Digging into this a bit deeper, there are a few key ways in which therapeutic massage differs from the massages you typically receive at a spa. First and foremost, therapeutic massage is focused on addressing specific issues the client is experiencing. Whether it’s pain relief, increased range of motion, or something else entirely, the therapist will work with the client to ensure that their needs are met.

In addition, therapeutic massage therapists are trained to understand the human body and how it works. This means that they can target specific areas that may be causing pain or discomfort. Spa massages, on the other hand, are more general and don’t usually target specific areas.

Finally, therapeutic massage sessions typically last longer than spa massages. This allows the therapist to really work on those areas that need attention without feeling rushed.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

One of the most common benefits of therapeutic massage is that it can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Massage therapy has been shown to lower cortisol levels in the body (the hormone responsible for stress) and can even boost serotonin levels (the hormone responsible for happiness). If you’re looking for a way to relax and de-stress, a therapeutic massage may be just what you need.

Relieves Pain

Another common benefit of therapeutic massage is that it can relieve pain. If you suffer from chronic pain or pain from an injury, therapeutic massage can help to reduce inflammation and increase the range of motion. Massage therapy can also help to release endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers) into the bloodstream. If you’re looking for relief from pain, a therapeutic massage may be able to help.

Additionally, your therapeutic massage therapist will address trigger points, which are areas of tension that can refer pain to other parts of the body. By working on these trigger points, your therapist can help to break the cycle of pain and provide you with relief.

Improves Sleep Quality

Therapeutic massage can also improve sleep quality. If you have trouble sleeping or tend to wake up feeling groggy, Massage therapy can help you sleep better by reducing stress and anxiety levels. Massage therapy can also improve circulation and decrease muscle tension, both of which can lead to a deeper, more restful sleep. If you’re looking for ways to improve your sleep quality, therapeutic massage may be worth considering.

Time

Another key difference between the two types of massage is the length of time. A typical spa massage is typically around 45 minutes long following a set routine of the time that is permitted.

A therapeutic massage may last 60-90 minutes with additional time for consultation and assessment at the beginning of the session. This allows your therapist to really focus on those areas that need attention without feeling rushed.

So which massage therapy is right for you?

Answering this question can be a tough one. And, it really comes down to your motivation, purpose and goals for seeking out massage therapy.

If you simply want to relax, de-stress and escape from the everyday grind, then a retail or spa massage may be right for you. If you are looking for the occasional treat for yourself, this can be a nice reward.

But, if you’re looking for something more targeted or investing in your overall health and wellness, for a massage that can address specific issues like pain relief, increased range of motion or improved sleep quality, then therapeutic massage may be a better option. Ironically, our clients attest to the fact that they experience a more profound relaxation from a therapeutic massage than from a spa massage – even though the therapeutic massage may be focused on particular areas of tension or pain. After all, when you have less pain, less discomfort, less stress and anxiety – you can relax more deeply.

At the end of the day, it’s really up to you and what you’re looking for in a massage therapy session. If you have questions or need help deciding, our team at Rupp Massage is always happy to chat with you and help guide you to the best massage therapy session for your needs.
